It only seems appropriate to start this series with the song that Winamp says I have listened to most since I've installed it: Shinkuu no Diamond Crevasse by May'n. (Warning, this video contains spoilers for Macross Frontier.)
Lyrics:

When I was in love with God I didn’t think that such a parting would come If I couldn’t ever touch you again Then I’d want you to embrace me again for the last time at least It’s long long good-bye… Goodbye, goodbye, over and over again I tell myself as best as I can Waving my hand is kindness, right? Now, I want strength I encountered you; the STAR shined and I was born Indeed if I love, indeed if there’s i Waiting for a hopeless miracle, what will become of me? The twinkle of planets stained with tears is gone… I won’t forget your warmth Your kindness, and your hands that surrounded everything It’s long long good-bye… Goodbye, goodbye, beloved one If you were with me, I would’ve been able to walk here I wasn’t alone, right? Now, I want the answer Catch the comets that seem to be burning and light the fire I want to love, I want to be loved By one chilled body, what will become of the world? The bravado that I kept up is dissolving; long for… What’s the matter? My tears overflow and they can’t stop I encountered you; the STAR shined and I was born Indeed if I love, indeed if there’s i Waiting for a hopeless miracle, what will become of me? The twinkle of planets stained with tears is gone… If I am reborn and we can come across each other again Surely you’ll find me then Don’t ever let go of me again, catch me I want you to whisper, “You’re not alone” to me, planet… |
Meaning: I believe that this song a story about a girl coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. She absolves to be strong but will never forget her love. Before long however, she becomes grief stricken and yearns for her love's return. The final verse can be interpreted one of two ways. The first and more grim is that the girl chooses to end her life so that she may find her lover again in another life. With some context from this songs appearance in the Anime however, I believe it is a metaphor for her deciding to change into a better person so when she next encounters her man so they may fall in love again. In the first interpretation, the "loss" was most likely an untimely death. In the latter, that loss was him leaving her.
Why I Like It: Ever since working with musical genius Yoko Kanno during her role as Sheryl Nome in Macross Frontier, May'n has been easily one of the best vocalists in the world. She always had a strong voice, but she wasn't using it for the right songs. Shinkuu no Diamond Crevasse is the best example of her transformation from pop artist to "intergalactic idol" status. Even before I knew much Japanese, I could feel a strong emotion behind each and every lyric.
No song of the week for the 19th. Feeling under the weather.
