Fall 2012 Anime Preview - Part 1

I am back with another Anime preview for this coming season! The summer lineup was pretty disappointing so I skipped it. I've watched a few episodes of Sword Art Online and it is decent so far but for the most part I've just been working and playing Tera (CuddleBunny on Basilisk Crag if you want to give a shout out!). Anyways, I know you folks have been waiting for another good post, I'll make up for it by doing all of the Anime on this chart by AnimuCharts on Twitter. (Except for Monsuno, which started in February.) I'll also split this into two parts so the mass of videos doesn't make it too painful to load.

  • Battle Spirits: Sword Eyes

    Official Site: http://nagoyatv.com/battlespirits_sword/
    Genre: Action, Shounen
Airs: September 9th @ 7:00AM JST on TV Asahi
    Producers: Sunrise
    Episodes: 50+?

    Notable Features:
    • Sequel to Battle Spirits: Heroes
    • Will not watch.

Summary: The story is set 14 years after Atlantia, the largest country in the world of Legendia, was torn apart by riots. The protagonist Tsurugi Tatewaki was secreted away from the chaos at a young age. Oblivious to his true birthplace, Tsurugi grows up as a spirited boy in the neighboring rocky land of Pacifis.

One day, Tsurugi suddenly comes across the "Shining Sword," and his great adventure begin. An army of darkness is hunting down the 12 Sword Braves, and as the army pursues Tsurugi, a figure appears before him. Bringer is a Card Battle Droid entrusted with the duty of protecting Tsurugi. Trained by Bringer in the ways of the Battle Spirits combat, Tsurugi joins the other Sword Braves in rising up against the army of darkness with his Key Spirit "Shining Dragon."

Preview: Your typical kids/shounen/card game Anime. The show already has 150+ episodes between several seasons so if you're in to that sort of thing then I'm sure it's decent.

  • Kamisama Hajimemashita

    Official Site: http://www.mikagesha.com/
Genre: Comedy, Demons, Fantasy, Shoujo, Supernatural
Airs: October 2nd @ 2:05AM JST on TV Tokyo
    Producers: TMS Entertainment
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Nothing really.
    • Will not watch.

Summary: Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she's just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwittingly taken over his job as a local deity!

Nanami has all kinda of new responsibilities she doesn't understand, dangers she's unaware of, and a cranky yet attractive ex-familiar. What's a new-fledged godling to do?

Preview: This has the potential to be funny at least but I've had my fair share of these sort of Anime in the past and won't watch it unless someone I know vouches for it. I can't imagine it being nearly as charming as Inu x Boku, watch that instead.

  • Ixion Saga DT

    Official Site: http://ixion-saga-anime.jp/
    Genre: Action, Fantasy
    Airs: October 8th @ 1:05AM JST on TV Tokyo/AT-X
    Producers: Brains Base
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Director: Shinji Takamatsu (Gintama)
    • Will not watch.

Summary: The game and anime follow Kon Hokaze, a boy who embarks on a journey from our world to an alternate world known as Mira, which is full a mysterious energy known as Alma. After saving Princess Ecarlate from attackers, he soon finds himself in the middle of a struggle around Alma.

Preview: Since it is based on an MMORPG, I have no expectations for this. The animation is pretty poor and feels like it was just an afterthought to milk whatever extra they can out of the game.

  • Magi - The Labyrinth of Magic

    Official Site: http://www.project-magi.com/
    Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen
    Airs: October 7th @ 5:00PM JST on MBS/TBS
    Producers: Aniplex, A-1 Pictures
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will watch.

Summary: This story is about the flow of fate and the battle to keep the world on the right path. Aladdin is a boy who has set out to explore the world after being trapped in a room for most of his life. His best friend is a flute with a djinn in it named Ugo. Soon enough, Aladdin discovers he is a Magi, a magician who chooses kings, and he was born to choose kings who will follow the righteous path, battling against those who want to destroy fate. Follow his adventures as he meets others from 1000 Arabian Nights, like Ali Baba and Sinbad, and fights to keep the balance of world in check!

Preview: This looks pretty cool. I don't know much about the stories of Arabian Nights but from what I do know about Aladdin and Sinbad this Anime certainly has promise. The animation is superb, I just wish there was a longer trailer floating around somewhere.

  • ROBOTICS;NOTES

    Official Site: http://roboticsnotes.jp/
    Genre: Sci-Fi
Airs: October 12 @ 1:15AM JST on Fuji TV
    Producers: Production I.G
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Original Creator: Nitro+ (Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate)
    • Seiyu: Rie Kugimiya as Airi
    • Will definitely watch.

Summary: 2019, Divergence Ratio 1.048596. The near future, where a device popularly called the PokeCom, packaged with PhoneDroid OS, spreads, bringing the Augmented Reality world close to existence.

Chuuoutanegashima High School's Robot Research Club is in danger of losing its club status. Kaito Yashio, one of only two members, is only obsessed with robot fighting games, showing no interest in the Robo Club even in this situation. The reckless, useless club head, Akiho Senomiya, aims to complete a giant robot, struggling hard to avoid losing the club's status.

Then, one day, Kaito discovers the A.R. annotation that becomes the Kimishima Report. Written in that report is the indictment of someone named Kou Kimishima's conspiracy involving the world.

Preview: One of a few things that I've been looking forward to for a while. I loved Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate so I don't know why this would be any different. I also love robotics, I even used to belong to a robotics club in high school (http://usfirst.org/ if anyone is interested in finding their own).

  • PSYCHO-PASS

    Official Site: http://psycho-pass.com/
    Genre: Drama
Airs: October 12 @ 12:45AM JST on Fuji TV
    Producers: ?
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Clouded in mystery.
    • Will try.

    Summary: ?

Preview: Literally the only things I have to go with on this Anime are the teaser site, video, and tv stations. The video simply depicts a 3D gun and the website has a shore-side cityscape in the background. Everyone involved seems pretty adamant on not giving anything away so the level of secrecy alone is enough to intrigue me.

  • Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb

    Official Site: ?
    Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Airs: October 5th @ 1:25AM JST on TBS
    Producers: Shaft
    Episodes: 12?

    Notable Features:
    • Will not watch, unless the first season happens onto my screen.

Summary: The fourth season of Hidamari Sketch: For years, Yuno has dreamed of attending Yamabuki Arts High School, but now that she's been accepted, it means the scary prospect of moving away from her home and family for the first time! Fortunately, Yuno quickly learns that if her new neighbors at the eclectic Hidamari (Sunshine) Apartments aren't technically family, at least the majority share the bond of being fellow art students. From second year students like Hiro and Sae, who try to behave like helpful older sisters (mostly successfully) to her hyperactive new neighbor, classmate and best friend Miyako (who has the scariest apartment ever) Yuno begins to build the support network she'll need for dealing with strange characters like her oddly masculine landlady, her cosplay obsessed home room teacher, her tooth-chattering principal and all of the other odd denizens who inhabit her chosen world of art.

Preview: I've never watched this, but I am sure it has the same Shaft charm that shows like Arakawa Under the Bridge have. If you are a fan of the original, you'll likely watch it no matter what I say.

  • Busou Shinki

    Official Site: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/busou/
    Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Airs: October 5th @ 1:55AM JST on TBS
    Producers: 8bit
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Might try.

Summary: The slice-of-life battle story is set in a future that has neither World War III nor an alien invasion — just an ordinary future set after our current age. In this world, robots are part of everyday life, and they contribute in various aspects of society. "Shinki" are 15-centimeter-tall (about 6-inch-tall) cute partners made to assist humans. Equipped with intelligence and emotions, they devote themselves to serving their "Masters."

These Shinki can even be equipped with weapons and armor to fight each other. Such Shinki are named "Busou Shinki" (literally, "armed divine princesses"). In particular, the Shinki Ann (Arnval), Aines (Altines), and Rane (Altrane) serve a high school freshman named Masato. Things change when a new Shinki, the bellicose Staarf, joins them.

Preview: Based on a series of cool figures, I never got around to watching the first version (Busou Shinki: Moon Angel) and heard it was subpar. This series seems to have a different producer though so it may be better or even worse. I might give this a try if I get around to it. Sorry for the shoddy video, the videos on the site weren't launching for me.

  • Hayate no Gotoku! I Can't Take My Eyes Off You

    Official Site: http://www.hayate-project.com/
    Genre: Comedy, Parody, Shounen, Harem
Airs: October 4th @ 2:05AM JST on TV Tokyo
    Producers: Manglobe
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will watch.

Summary: 16-year-old Hayate is really down on his luck. Because his unemployed parents are good-for-nothings who waste what money they have on gambling, Hayate had to start working at a young age to help out his family. Although such experience has made him inhumanly fast and tough and skilled at things boys aren't normally skilled at, it has also left him in an awkward position, as his parents have racked up such a huge gambling debt that they have sold Hayate to the Yakuza for the value of his organs. In a desperate attempt to avoid that fate, Hayate decides to become a "bad guy" and kidnap someone to be held for ransom, but his efforts to do so are mistaken as a confession of love by the girl he targets. When he helps save the (as it turns out) ultra-wealthy 13-year-old Nagi from real kidnappers, she takes him in and gives him a job as her new personal butler (and love interest) until he can pay off his debt. But Hayate is more attracted to Nagi's beautiful teenage maid Maria, and head butler Klaus is initially disapproving of a boy with such a poor look. And then there's Nagi's pet Tama, who is also a force to be reckoned with.

Preview: What I watched of the original was great. I thought the show was pretty hilarious, albeit too long for me to commit a lot of time to when I have other things to watch. This series will likely be a retelling of the original but written by the original author himself. I'll try to watch it this time around, especially if it being handled by the creator means it will be better like FMA:Brohood. As long as The Rie is still doing Nagi's VA work, it should be great fun.

  • Chou Soku Henkei Gyrozetter

    Official Site: http://gyrozetter.com/
    Genre: Action, Cars, Mecha, Shounen
Airs: October 2nd @ 6:00PM JST on TV Tokyo
    Producers: A-1 Pictures
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will definitely not watch.

Summary: Anime adaptation of a card game which depicts battles between cars that transform into robots.

Preview: Autobots + Battle Spirits? Okay... Here is a trailer for the video game instead, which actually looks more fun.

  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

    Official Site: http://www.tk-anime.info/
    Genre: Comedy, Romance, School, Shoujo
Airs: October 2st @ 1:35AM JST on TV Tokyo
    Producers: Brains Base
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Might try.

Summary: Mizutani Shizuku is the type of person who only cares for her own grades. But when she accidentally delivers lesson notes to Yoshida Haru, he becomes convinced they are friends.

Haru turns out to have a very innocent personality, but who would've thought that Haru would actually confess to Shizuku?

A cold-hearted girl and super-troublemaker romance with a fresh new perspective.

Preview: Sounds something like Kaichou wa Maid-sama to me, which I enjoyed. Not much else to say here, if you're into this sort of thing watch it!

  • Aikatsu!

    Official Site: http://www.aikatsu.net/
    Genre: Music
Airs: October 8th @ 7:30PM JST on TV Tokyo
    Producers: Sunrise
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will not watch.

Summary: Anime adaptation of the Aikatsu! arcade card game about producing idols.

Preview: Not much to go off of, but unlike PSYCHO-PASS this does not sound very interesting.

  • Sukitte Ii na yo.

    Official Site: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/sukinayo/
    Genre: Romance, School, Shoujo
Airs: October 7th @ 1:00AM JST on Tokyo MX
    Producers: Zexcs
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will not watch.

Summary: Mei Tachibana has spent her 16 years without a boyfriend or friends. One day, she injures the most popular boy in school, Yamato Kurosawa, due to a misunderstanding. For some reason though, it seems that he takes a liking to her and one-sidedly claims that they're friends. Furthermore, he not only protects Mei from a stalker, but does so with a kiss…?!!

Preview: Same category as Kaibutsu-kun, but I have a gut feeling this one won't be nearly as good.

  • Little Busters!

    Official Site: http://key.visualarts.gr.jp/lb_anime/
    Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School
Airs: October 6th @ 10:30PM on Tokyo MX
    Producers: J.C. Staff, Warner Bros.
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Key
    • Will definitely watch.

Summary: Riki was a child when his parents died, leaving him hopeless and depressed. What saved him was a group of four kids calling themselves the Little Busters. They took Riki out and played with him during his time of need. He really enjoyed being together with them, and his grief gradually faded away. Now in his second year of high school they still hang out, fight and live together, and enjoy their school life.

Preview: I am psyched for this! Ever since Key makes wonderful visual novels and KyoAni... wait... J.C. Staff? Well, I am still pretty excited for this story and am confident that J.C. Staff will do a reasonable job. I liked shows like Shana and Shigofumi enough anyways. The story also reminds me of AnoHana with the friends theme and Little Busters vs Super Peace Busters. If you watch any single Anime this season, it should be this one!

  • Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankei Nai Yo Ne-

    Official Site: http://oniai.com/
    Genre: Comedy, Romance, Harem
    Airs: October 5th @ 11:00PM JST on AT-X
    Producers: Silver Link
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Sis-Com
    • REALLY cool website
    • Will definitely not watch.

Summary: Himenokouji twins Akito and Akiko have finally reunited with each other after separation due to the death of their parents. After six years of living apart they suddenly began to live under the same roof due to Akito's desire to live as a family unit once more. Things were fine at first until Akiko began to express her incestuous love for her older brother, who only sees her as a little sister.

Preview: Really? Another one!? I am sick and tired of Sis-Com Anime. There are just too many and they're all pretty much the same. If you have a thing for incest, then this is for you. Even then though, you should wait for the Bluray release or heavenly beams of light will shatter any potential enjoyment.

  • To LOVE-Ru Darkness

    Official Site: http://www.j-toloveru.com/
Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Romance, School, Shounen, Harem
Airs: October 6th @ 1:00AM JST on Tokyo MX
    Producers: Xebec
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Will not watch.

Summary: Sequel to To-Love-Ru, all of our main characters make an appearance along with some new additions. Rito continues to be caught in over the top uncensored ecchi scenarios.

The alien Deviluke sisters still use their unique abilities to grab Rito's love confession. Nana and Momo have transferred into the school and meet Mea, who seems to be a worry free and joyful girl.

Momo in particular wants to share Rito and create a harem for him. While scheming her plan, she confronts Golden Darkness also know as Yami.

They are interrupted by possessed students who begin to fight with abnormal strength. Now the new plot line appears as a mysterious person who's in control of the students tests Yami's assassination skills.

    Who is this new enemy?

Preview: More To LOVE-ru. This season should have everything the last one was lacking (which happened to be the material everyone was watching it for). Trailer NSFW.

  • Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

    Official Site: http://www.anime-chu-2.com/
    Genre: Comedy, Romance, School
    Airs: October 4th @ 12:30AM JST on AT-X
    Producers: Kyoto Animation
    Episodes: ?

    Notable Features:
    • Kyoto Animation
    • Will watch.

Summary: Yuuta Togashi suffered from chuunibyou (8th grade sickness) while he was in middle school. When he graduated, he put that dark history behind him and forgot about it... or he was supposed to. High school was smooth sailing and full of enjoyment - until the unavoidable, sad event occurs. The event that locks Yuuta into a contract with Rikka Takanashi and disrupts his desperately ordinary life.

Preview: So THIS is what KyoAni is doing instead of Little Busters. The trailer is pretty moe and it looks quite action packed. This is sort of how I imagine "Final Hitode Tsukai" would have played out had it been made into a real Anime. I have high hopes for this, if KyoAni would give up the chance (I'm assuming they were offered) to do another Key show for it.
